Sandham, James: Humble Start in Alberta

Humble Start in Alberta

by James Sandham

In this picture my mother, Mildred nee Fuller was expecting me. She was born in Kipp, Alberta in 1910. She had just completed her licentiate at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, qualifying her to teach piano which she went on to do for many years. She died and was buried in Lethbridge in 1994. My father, John Robert Sandham was a farmer and this photo was taken at the family farm near Lethbridge in 1931. He was a part-time miner for a couple of years, to keep the farm going during the depression. In his retirement he became interested in travelling to Asian countries by tramp freighter. He spent eleven winters in Acapulco, Mexico. He was born in 1900 in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. He died and was buried in Lethbridge in 1994.My younger brother and I lived with our parents in a tar-paper shack during those early years.
