2019-2020 Meeting Topics

Unless otherwise specified, all regular meetings are scheduled for 6:30pm at HTM Insurance, corner of Elgin St. and Wilkins Gate, Cobourg. Free parking and fully accessible.

FamilySearch.org - Linda Peterson of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will explain the current, free offerings on FamilySearch.org. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm for the AGM & coffee followed by the 7:30 pm presentation.

Speaker: Cheryl Levy PLCGS, British Home Children

The British Home Children were part of a child emigration scheme meant to assist with a growing social situation in Britain, and hopefully, give them an opportunity to carve out a better life for themselves. Beginning in 1869, over 100,000 children were sent from the UK to Canada and other Commonwealth countries. This year of 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the launch of this significant part of Canadian immigration.

Speaker Anne Burnham – Farming in Northumberland has played a significant role in the development and health of Northumberland since the 1790’s. Anne will speak about the “Family Farm” and its genealogical connections.

Speaker: Linda Corupe – Making Her Presence Known –  It is often “a man’s world” when it comes to researching ancestors in Upper Canada. This talk will guide the audience through the records left behind in archives and libraries that researchers can use today to enhance their knowledge of female ancestors.


Speaker: Danielle Manning, Archives of Ontario
This presentation will suit researchers who are unable to travel to Toronto to visit the Archives of Ontario in person. Learn how to use the Archives of Ontario's website and Microfilm InterLoan Program to access collections - particularly records that are helpful for genealogical research. The speaker will also explain which services are available from anywhere in Ontario and provide a guided tour of the Archives' website.
